Lexington, KY - Feb. 2, 2010 /PRAvenueNW/ -- More than 650 Fayette County public, private and home school students in grades four through 12 will compete in the 26th annual Kentucky American Water Science Fair coordinated by Fayette County Public Schools on Saturday, Feb. 6, at Bryan Station High School in Lexington. The theme of this year’s event is “Jump into Science – Running Strong for 125 Years,” which highlights the upcoming Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games and commemorates Kentucky American Water’s 125th year of operation – both of which occur in 2010.

Judging of the students’ projects begins in the school’s gymnasium at 9 a.m. and will conclude around noon. The traditional Science Sensation exhibits and hands-on activities, coordinated by Explorium of Lexington and located outside the gymnasium, will be open from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. for science fair participants and the general public. The exhibits and activities are free and will include the University of Kentucky Solar Car team, the UK Arboretum, live raptors presented by the Audubon Society, Bluegrass PRIDE, the Kentucky Aviation Museum and more.
The awards program will begin at 3 p.m. in the gymnasium and will feature Nick Rowe, senior vice president, American Water and president/chairman of Kentucky American Water; Stu Silbermann, superintendent of Fayette County Public Schools; and Jim Newberry, mayor of Lexington. Among this year’s special awards are Kentucky American Water’s water awards for outstanding projects related to water and the Mayor’s Urban Environmental Award for outstanding projects related to the environment. Winners of the district fair will advance to the Central Kentucky Regional Science and Engineering Fair to be held Saturday, Feb. 27, at the University of Kentucky. Kentucky American Water also serves as a sponsor for that annual event.
