URP applauds Honduras Leaders for preserving democracy

New York, NY July 4, 2009 /PRAvenueNW/ -- The United Republican Party of Guyana extends its support to Honduras' interim president, Roberto Micheletti and the people of Honduras in their struggle to preserve democracy.

“The Constitution is the supreme law of the land, and orders from the country's highest court cannot and should not be ignored by those who have pledged to defend that Constitution” said Max Mohamed, Leader of the United Republican Party of Guyana. Addressing a group of party supporters in New York, Mr. Mohamed said that “when a serving head of state blatantly refuses to recognize the Court's orders, then it can be argued that such head of state is no longer operating in support of the country's Constitution”

The decision of Former President Manual Zelaya to push for a referendum within 180 days of an election was a clear violation of his country's constitution. The supreme court's order to halt the referendum was blatantly ignored. Unfortunately, this disregard of the Supreme Court has become generally acceptable in several countries in the Americas, including Guyana where former President Janet Jagan tore up a court's order in front of televisions cameras.

The resolve of the Honduras Supreme Court and Congress must be applauded. Their efforts to preserve a fledgling democracy must be supported in spite of pressures from other Latin Leaders who have successfully manipulated their own laws as they seek to remain in office indefinitely.

In a world where the erosion of democratic foundations and principles have become common, the Honduran leaders have taken a courageous and admirable step in the right direction. The United Republican Party wish President Micheletti and the Government of Honduras every success in their efforts to preserve the rule of law in their country.
